History
The JL Zwane Centre is a well established, professionally run and highly respected organisation which has been caring for thecommunity since 1994. Its core commitment is to uplift and empower the people of Gugulethu and surrounding areas through partnerships with caring individuals, organizations and companies. Named after its founding pastor and renowned peacemaker, the JL Zwane Centre was established in1994 as a joint initiative of Stellenbosch University, the Gugulethu community and the JL Zwane Church. The idea was sparked by a deep need to uplift the community of Gugulethu, home to 350,000 people, many of whom face grinding poverty. The unemployment rate in the area is about 65%.
Nelson Mandela once said: "It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another." This is perfectly in tune with the way of thinking at the JL Zwane Centre, where various organisations work hand in hand with the community.
